In consultation with their advisor, student will group these elective courses into a track, or a specialization (e.g. post-colonial literature, feminist literature, environmental literature, the novel, 20th century literature, etc.). The students will justify their track in an essay that will be part of their portfolio produced in consultation with their advisor in PORTFOLIO (LITR 479).
Student Learning Outcomes
- A clearer understanding of the ways literature at once articulates and reflects social, political, cultural and global contexts;
- Deeper aesthetic appreciation of poems, drama, fiction, nonfiction, and/or films as manifestations of imagination;
- Familiarity with the methods, theories, and issues of literary criticism;
- The ability to advocate critical responses in classroom discussion and to listen to and consider the critical analyses of others;
- The ability to analyze narrative and literary motifs and to present those understandings in critical papers.
Oregon Preliminary Teaching Licensure in English Language Arts
Students who are also seeking an Oregon Preliminary Teaching License must also complete a Secondary Education major with Licensure. In order to complete the Secondary Education major with Licensure, students should begin taking education courses no later than their sophomore year. The student must be advised by faculty in both majors. Alternatively, students may complete a Teaching Certificate program at Linfield after degree completion. Students should seek advice from the Education Department Director if you are considering the post-graduation certificate option.
Students seeking teaching licensure may earn no grade lower than a C in both major and all licensure coursework.*
