Fire safety is an essential responsibility shared by all members of the Linfield University community and all students are expected to comply with directives for safety during an emergency.

Fire Safety Equipment and Locations

All buildings, including residence halls and apartment communities, are equipped with fire safety systems designed to protect the community in the event of an emergency. Members of the campus community should familiarize themselves with the location of:

• Fire alarms and pull stations.
• Fire extinguishers and emergency equipment.
• Emergency exits and stairwells.
• Posted evacuation routes and building-specific fire safety information.

Emergency exits, hallways, stairwells, and fire safety equipment must remain accessible at all times. Nobody may not block, tamper with, cover, or otherwise interfere with any fire safety equipment or emergency pathways.

Tampering with Equipment

Tampering with fire-fighting equipment or alarms, turning in a false alarm, or engaging in other behavior that constitutes a significant fire hazard.

Residential fire safety policies

Sprinkler Systems

Many residential buildings are equipped with automatic sprinkler systems that activate during a fire emergency. Residents must follow these expectations regarding sprinkler systems:

• Never hang items from sprinkler heads, pipes, or fire safety equipment.
• Keep all personal belongings, furniture, and decorations away from sprinkler heads.
• Do not cover, block, or tamper with sprinkler systems.
• Report damaged, leaking, or malfunctioning sprinkler equipment immediately to Residence Life and Housing or Facilities.

Tampering with fire safety equipment creates a serious risk to the entire community and may result in conduct action, financial charges, and/or additional university consequences.

Fire Drills and Evacuation Procedures

Fire drills are conducted regularly throughout the academic year to ensure residents understand emergency procedures and know how to safely exit their residential community. Participation in fire drills is required for all residents.

When a fire alarm sounds, residents must:

• Immediately stop all activities and evacuate the building.
• Close doors behind them when exiting, if safe to do so.
• Use designated stairwells and exits; do not use elevators during a fire alarm.
• Move a safe distance away from the building and follow instructions from university staff or Linfield Public Safety.
• Remain outside until authorized personnel provide permission to re-enter.

Residents who fail to evacuate during a fire alarm, interfere with emergency procedures, or misuse fire safety equipment may be referred to the student conduct process.

Maintaining fire safety is a community responsibility. Residents play an important role in protecting themselves and their neighbors by following safety expectations, reporting concerns, and responding appropriately during emergencies.
