Advanced Certificate in Medical Spanish
The Advanced Certificate in Medical Spanish (ACMS) requires 16 credits and is designed to help students achieve advanced Spanish proficiency while developing specialized medical terminology and cultural competence. This certificate prepares students for participation in multilingual and multicultural healthcare environments and gives them a competitive edge in health-related careers.
Unlike the Spanish Language Proficiency Certificate (LPC), which targets intermediate proficiency and general cultural study, the ACMS is intended for students at a higher proficiency level and emphasizes health content in medical settings. Like the LPC, it requires fewer credits than a minor and can be completed without study abroad. For fuller exposure to Spanish language and culture and to develop deeper intercultural skills, the department recommends a minor or major.
Students with prior Spanish experience take a placement exam to determine course level. Besides completing 16 credits of advanced Spanish coursework, students must achieve a composite Advanced-level score on the AVANT STAMP4S Medical Spanish assessment. Students are encouraged to pursue a practicum, internship, or service-learning experience in a healthcare setting serving Spanish-speaking communities. A minimum B average is required across all certificate courses.

HEALTH AND HUMANITY: FILM AND MEDICINE IN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL (GLSP 375), SPECIAL TOPICS: JAN TERM TRAV (GLSP 398), PEER INSTRUCTION (GLCS 439), INDEPENDENT STUDY (GLSP 480), or INTERNSHIP (GLCS 487) may be used with prior approval.

Students who do not meet the Advanced-level benchmark may qualify for the general Spanish LPC, which requires an Intermediate-Mid level of proficiency and completion of the corresponding certificate requirements
- Demonstrate Advanced-low level or higher language proficiency in Spanish as defined by ACTFL, as measured by the AVANT STAMP4S Medical Spanish assessment.
- Engage respectfully and without bias with culturally diverse Spanish-speaking communities in healthcare settings.
- Apply specialized health and medical terminology accurately and appropriately in oral and written communication, including in real-world healthcare scenarios as reflected in proficiency assessments.
