VI.11 Academic Honors
VI.11.1 Honors at Graduation
Latin honors designations are awarded to those baccalaureate degree candidates who have earned a minimum of 54 Linfield credits in courses with differentiated grades (A-F). The GPA calculation is based on all Linfield credit, including Linfield study abroad, and utilizes the Linfield repeat policy. The award levels are as follows:
Summa cum laude: 3.900 – 4.000
Magna cum laude: 3.800 – 3.899
Cum laude: 3.650 – 3.799
VI.11.2 Departmental Honors
All students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 and a GPA of 3.25 or better in their majors are invited, in their senior year, to undertake an honors thesis or research project to qualify for department honors at graduation.
An honors thesis or project may take one of the following forms:
- Data or information based on primary and secondary source material that has been collected and presented by the student, according to acceptable literary, historical, experimental, descriptive, statistical, or other methods of research.
- An original, creative piece of writing that has been approved by the student's thesis committee.
- An original, creative project (art, drama, music) that has the approval of the student's thesis committee.
There are two options for receiving credit for the honors thesis or project.
Under option I:
- The student will receive two to five semester credits. This is determined at the beginning of the project by the student and the advisor.
- The student will pay an appropriate additional fee if necessary.
- The thesis must be accepted in order to receive credit.
- If accepted, the thesis will receive an A grade.
- The student will receive recognition in the following manner:
- A grade of A will appear on the transcript along with appropriate credit.
- Formal recognition at graduation.
- A notation on the student’s diploma.
Under option II:
- The student and advisor will make a determination for no credit at the beginning of the project.
- No extra fees will be levied.
- Recognition will be given as follows:
- A notation on the transcript.
- Formal recognition at graduation.
- A notation on the student’s diploma.
VI.11.3 Dean’s List
Dean’s List honors are awarded to those students who have earned a GPA at least equivalent to cum laude in a given semester or Summer Term. To be eligible, a student must have earned at least 12 credits in courses with differentiated grades (A-F) and have received no incomplete (I) or in progress (IP) designations. Eligibility is computed following the posting of grades at the end of each semester or Summer Term.
